When I was a freshman in college I was a DJ at the campus radio station. It’s not as glamorous as it sounds.
WVSU-FM (The Voice of Samford University!) had 10 watts of power at 91.1 on the FM dial – the lowest amount of power allowed by the FCC. One of our station identifications proudly proclaimed that we were “WVSU – more powerful than a shining nightlight!” We joked that when the wind blew hard enough, you could hear us all the way across campus. Many times I wondered if anyone was listening as I played jazz records no one cared about.
Then one night, we had a home basketball game, a big campus Christmas celebration, and a big fraternity/sorority holiday ball – simultaneously. The idea hit us that we should do a tape delay of the basketball game and play it on the radio.
Because I could talk fast and extemporize, I was selected as the play-by-play announcer. A friend, Kent Bowers, who had actually played basketball once, was chosen to do the color commentary.
Announcing the game was a ball. We won and that added to the excitement. Word had gotten out about the re-broadcast and as I walked by to my dorm that night, I could hear my own voice coming out of stereo speakers. People had finally discovered the campus radio station. People finally tuned in.
Do you think it is possible that God is broadcasting signals to you? Could these signals be telling you that He desires a conversation? Could your feelings and interactions with others be signals that you need to pray? Could God be speaking directly to your heart and you dismiss that leading as something else, but definitely not God?
This Sunday I begin a three part series entitled Tune In. We will look at what scripture teaches us about listening to the signals God sends, and what we are supposed to do with them. Be here Sunday and be ready to tune in.
