I am a Florida fan, so I have followed the story of Urban Meyer with much interest.
For those of you who do not follow college ball, Urban Meyer, the head coach at Florida, announced his resignation on December 26th; then the next day said he would take an indefinite leave of absence. Apparently he has had some significant health issues related to overwork and stress.
I want the best for Urban Meyer, so this is not to criticize him. It is to say I have seen the same issues at work on less public stage with ministers. You strive, you succeed, and then you pay a price.
God us all, but especially leaders, that rest one day out of seven. That means no text messages, no cell phone calls, no strategizing, just rest - and focus on God.
We often miss the point of all the festivals in the Old Testament. These amounted to four weeks of time off from work to honor God. God not only gave people time to rest weekly, but annually.
So to all of us in ministry, take some time. Keep a sabbath. Okay, you work on Sunday. Take a day off. Take your vacation days.
Churches, allow your ministers not to be present. Give your minister adequate time off. Insist they take it.
The last 10% - God gave you children and a marriage as well as your ministry. He expects you to be a good steward of all three.
